Roussillon

_____________________________________________

The russet red coulouring, which tints every surface in Roussillon and gave the village its Latin name of Viscus Russulus (the red hill), is caused by the dust from the extraordinary ochre cliffs on which it stands.

With its surviving medieval walls, surrounding pines, and impressive location between the Lubéron and Mont Ventoux, Roussillon is beautiful enough. But it is given a wholly memorable, and indeed hauntingly surreal quality, by the strange, ochre landscape below it.

Roussillon's primary attraction is its setting, but arched alleys, 18th-century portals and ruined masonry around the fort give the village an irrestible charm.

Village life in Roussillon ~ the ochre colors virtually every building.
