Bonnieux
_____________________________________________
Looking out over fields towards the hill-village of Lacoste, Bonnieux lies seemingly suspended between the range of the Lubéron and the long fertile valley which spreads west towards Avignon.

This view of Bonnieux is taken from the old church which stands among ancient cedars
at the very top of the village. At the very foot of the village, dating from the time when community life came to be concentrated on the lower streets,
is a New Church, a neo-Romanesque structure.

A broad fertile valley separates the ranges of the Lubéron and the Ventoux. It was here that the original Gallo-Roman settlement of Bonnieux was founded. The sole survival of this settlement is the three-arched Pont St. Julien ~ a magnificently preserved bridge of the 3rd century A.D. The openings between the arches, as well as giving a remarkable lightness to the structure, had the practical function of allowing the water to pass through it more freely in times of flooding.
